    Default Dragon Riders

So we want a Dragon Riders RPG. Do we want it to be a page out of Pern? Literally pick a time in Pernese history and start there? As much as I love the books of Pern, I think this may have too many restrictions and not enough conflict to be a combat RPG. It would be character building only.

Now, I favor a parallel world or our own Pern like world. Maybe Pern undergoing civil war if you want a combat RPG. I would have no trouble creating such a world.

    We could do:
Dragons vs. Thread (not much in the form of real combat or sides to take)
Dragons vs. Halls (Combat and technology creations aplenty)
North vs. South (Combat with Dragons and Halls on both sides)
“Pern” vs. Invaders (invaders from beyond could be using Thread as a weapon, progresses into more of a war after a stretch of time for character development)

He found himself grinning down at her exasperated expression. "You have problems with authority."
She tossed her head, her eyes sparkling with mischief. Waves of dark hair spilled around her face and down her shoulders. "Fortunately, I don't acknowledge anyone as an authority, so there's no problem whatsoever."

I don't think it needs to be combat related. I think if we stick with dragons vs thread that would be enough. We already have a battle rpg going and having two would be a bit much.

Okay, from a messaging convo. With Becky she and I seem to have reached a somewhat agreement that we think it should be a new ‘Pern-like’ world. That well start with just thread and be more character development. . . but could always add in one of the afore-mentioned conflicts if we want more.

So, let the world creating begin!

I'm going to go post crazy throwing up ideas and guidelines. Please read and comment. These are my suggestions. . . not the final word. All input welcome.

Welcome to Lotas, the fourth world from Mizar. The binary stars work together to light the world, much like the people of Lotas must work together to survive. Humanity arrived here by accident when a colonial class vessel was forced, do to system failures, to find the nearest habitable world or risk drifting through the void of space forever.

They had scientists and environmental engineers to help them alter existing plants and animals, as well as modify Earth based species, to help make their new world more hospitable. As it was a colony ship, they were equipped with everything they needed to establish a moderate sized, minimal technology colony in just a few years. There were specialists in every field that would be needed to make a foreign world a home. That was good news.

The bad news came soon enough. Just three years after their arrival tragedy fell from the sky. Long string like creatures fell from the heavens, devouring every living thing in their path. It was a rain of death! The only safety was under inorganic mater or well beneath water. Less than one in three humans survived the destruction. But they survived, and they learned.

They named the mindless destroyer Score, in light of the marks left upon the land. Over the years they learned predict its coming and goings. Score fell upon Lotas in cycles of about eight years and then not for the next two hundred or so years. The summarized that it came from a heavenly body that revolved around the same two suns. Score drowned in water and froze quickly in icy weather. But fire was the best way to destroy it. And fire they had.

The early settlers had found creatures capable of eating the score, thriving off that deadly enemy that was clearly now a part of their ecosystem. They also found the Drakes. These little flying lizards were capable of breathing fire! But only in small quantities and the creatures were flighty at best. The surviving geneticists and eco-engineers set to work modifying and breeding a creature that could work with humans and clear the skies of Score. They called them Dragons!

Now, 1056 years after the Arrival, the fifth cycle of Score is about to fall on Lotas. Society, lacking the ability to maintain the level of technology the Settlers once had while struggling to survive, has reverted to a medieval like state. The need for protection from the deadly Score forced people into stone structures and caves, limiting their travel. Caves and stone keeps became population centers, practically city states, called Keeps. The leaders of these places became known as Lords, and the lands were called Keepings, and each were named after the Lord or local features.

Much knowledge was lost during that first, horrific cycle. The survivors, seeing how much was already lost, save what they could by forming Crafts to retain and teach the different skill sets most needed for survival. Seven Major Crafts, and a multitude of minor Crafts formed. Each took up the archaic apprentice-journeyman-master format. Each Craft recognized one Craft Master as their leader and spokesman on the Great Council.

And of course, there were the Dragons! As they bred true to design the flying creature grew to mammoth proportions. A full grown dragon could have a wingspan wider than a river. Telepathic, they were bonded to riders at birth. Together the pair would fly and fight the Score. Wings of dragons, consisting of no less than ten flew together in groups of seven to form Flights. Several Flights could belong to a single Sky, all under the leadership of the Queen Rider/Dragon and her Consort Rider/Dragon. Each Sky was named after, or in similar fashion to the local Keep, and looked to that Keep for sustenance.

So, it is that you come into this world that is ever so delicately balanced on the hard edge of survival. The day of Choosing draws nigh, when the youth of the Keeps are presented to the Lords, Masters and Riders to have their futures decided. What will you be?

    Lords
Out of necessity Lords have many children, not all do they claim and train to one day assume the role of leadership. If a Lord chooses you as a possible heir you will become first a Page. As a Page you’ll perform all the tasks of a Keep servant while undergoing training in each of the various Major Crafts. When the Lord thinks you are ready, you’ll be elevated to the status of Scholar. Great investment will be placed in your education and you will leave your housekeeping chores behind. From there you may become a Steward, keeping an minor Keep on behalf of the Lord (or Lady, of course).

    Crafts
There are seven Major Crafts: Bard, Healer Herder, Weaver, Woodsman, Mason and Smith. If chosen for one of these Crafts you’ll be named Apprentice and dressed in a light shade of the Craft’s color. You spend your days learning your craft and dealing with your peers. Your clothing will be of a deeper shade when you are recognized as a Journeyman and set forth upon the world to learn by plying your trade. As a Master you’ll dress in the deepest shade of your Craft’s color and be free to teach your craft to others.

Bards are teacher and musicians, educators and entertainers. Theirs is the burden of educating the masses as well as the joy of entertaining them. They also serve as the main conduit for news and information. It is not official unless it come by Bard, or bard trained carrier.

Healers are the main source of medical knowledge and healing.

Herders specialize in animal medicine, husbandry, and maintenance of the species brought or created by the Settlers.

Weavers do everything needed to clothe the people, from sheering sheep through to finished fabric, dyeing cloth to tanning leather. The are the seamstresses of Lotas.

Woodsmen maintain the orchards and hunt the animals within. It is they who maintain the poisonous Otta Orchards. The fruit of this tree, when consumed by Drakes and Dragons, creates a gas that they use to breathe fire and burn the Score from the sky!

Masons are most valuable builders trained to quarry, shape, and place stone. If a building is to survive Score, it must be Mason built! But they also mine for rare stones and metals.

Smiths shape metal into anything from pots and weapons to covered wagons and jewelry.

    Riders
If Rider you’ll be then you’ll stand upon the Hatching Sands as the young Dragons hatch and seek out their Riders. What color will it be? The Queens are all gold. They are the Matriarchs of the Skies (and restricted). Blue, green, red, brown or bronze? Which will have you, Chosen? Not that it can be seen yet. All dragonlings, except the queens, hatch out grey and remain so until their third year. So much to do and learn as your dragonling grows. When they shed their dragonling hide and their true colors are at last known, then you will be known far and wide as a true Rider. But still there is much to learn before you can lead a Wing or set your Dragon free to fly a mating flight. But when you attain this glory, then you’ll be forever called Dragon Lord!

I am open to changes. But to answer your questions:

    Lords
Shouldn't it be a Squire after a page? Then Scholar.. then Steward?

I was aiming for 3 levels per option, and still wanted it to be a noticeable change. The change in duties from Page to Squire is small unless there is a major battle.

    Crafts
Seven? Isn't that a lot? Just saying.. do we need a leader for each one?

We only need 3 Leaders, one Lord, Dragon Queen/Consort, and Craft Master. The rest can be written as needed. We can have a list of common use characters for the other Dragon Queens/Consorts, Lords, and Craft Masters. These can easily be ‘retired’ if a person wants to put a real character in place.

    Riders
So they won't know what color their dragon is until third year? How do they get to the third year?

They, as for any other level up, request a review from a Leader. Then they get to pick the color their dragon will become. This will give them time to develop their dragon before deciding what kind of dragon it will be. I wish the different colors of dragons to each have special skills.

    My two cents...

At first thought 7 crafts sounds like a lot to manage but when you stop and think it's not. It really means there are 9 classes to choose from. Granted, some probably won;t be chosen as much as others but it makes for a good general coverage.

One question.. I guess there isn't really a merchant class? Shops are run by their crafter?

Correct. Each Craft has those that teach, those that ‘do’ and those that sell. Some times a crafter does all three. Sometimes not.

Money will be in the form of Shells. These will be cut and carved pieces of dragon eggshell. The gold (queen) shell being worth more. This makes sense as when there is a Hatching, that sky will need more money to provision the new Riders. And as the Riders protect all others, there won’t be too much argument with the cash flow starting there.

I would suggest that there be three Leaders, one for each life path. Leaders should have unlimited character counts. Users should be limited to one new character per month. With the understanding, of course, that if they let a character go unused for more than 90 consecutive days they could lose their rank or character to another willing to take their place. Users would be capable of becoming Master Craftsmen, Dragon Queens/Consorts, or Lords/Ladies; though still answerable and able to be overridden by the Leaders.
